Dear Leaders,
Forgiveness is a major key to amazing leadership.
Forgiveness allows the team to move forward. Forgiveness restores peace and trust within the team. Forgiveness allows for the growth and development of the team that all leaders work so hard to achieve. Forgiveness is the key to it all.
Here’s the kicker; I’m not talking about leaders being more forgiving to their staff/team. Rather, I’m talking about leaders being more forgiving to THEMSELVES.
First of all, forgiveness is not part of our job as a leaders! Our teams shouldn’t even be looking at us for forgiveness. Instead, leaders offer their teams the opportunity to LEARN from their mistakes. Leaders give their teams open and safe spaces to explore and determine what their next steps should be.
We are not leaders because we are in a position to “dish out” forgiveness. Rather, we are leaders because we are in a position to show our team what forgiveness looks like whenever we forgive ourselves. And we all know that we make mistakes many many many MANY times a day, so we have countless opportunities to show our team what forgiveness looks like.
Also, can we truly and fully lead our team to the best of our ability if we are carrying heavy and unnecessary loads along the way? I’m not convinced we can. Our teams need us at our best and we cannot be at our best if we are holding on so tightly to thoughts/feelings/experiences that bring out the worst in us.
Show your team that you are one of them. Show your team that forgiveness is tough, but possible. Show your team how committed you are to them and their growth. Forgive yourself early and often.
Show your team how to FORGIVE and watch your team grow.
