“the greatest enemy of success and happiness is negativity of all kinds” – Goals! (18)
Category: Do Good
GOALS vs wishes and dreams
“many people think that they already have goals. alas! what they really have is a series of wishes or dreams, like ‘be happy’ or ‘make a lot of money’ or ‘have a nice family life’… A goal, however, is something distinctly different from a wish. it is clear, written and specific. it can be quickly and easily described to another person. you can measure it, and you know when you have achieved it or not” – Goals! (10)
writing down your wishes and dreams is one of the first steps to creating your goals. make your wishes and dreams something tangible, so they’re not just flying around in your head for the rest of your life. once you do this, it’s all about goal setting (how you plan on getting there).
Set Goals, Have a Purpose
“goals enable you to instill meaning and purpose into everything you do.” – Goals! (14)
WOW!
“i say no idea is worthwhile if it doesn’t start with ‘Wow!‘ ” – Robert Schuller
you always hear “go above and beyond.” but what does that really mean? it means to go “above and beyond” what is normal. greeting someone happy birthday on Facebook is normal, but calling them and greeting them happy birthday (which would take ~20 seconds) is going “above and beyond.”
be different. be good.
Positive Thinking
“hitting the wall isn’t an obstacle; it’s an opportunity” – The Compound Effect (145)
wow! this shows the power of positive thinking. the next time you “hit the wall” and want to give up, embrace the situation. be in tune with how you are feeling at that very moment. live that situation, learn from it, and share it. get better every day, in every way.
Who’s Influencing You?
“according to research by social psychologist Dr. David McClelland of Harvard, your “reference group” determines as much as 95% of your success or failure in life.” – The Compound Effect (127)
this doesn’t mean that you should surround yourself with people who are just like you. this doesn’t mean to surround yourself with just the most successful people. this doesn’t mean to surround yourself with just the smartest people. i believe more important to your success is surrounding yourself with just positive people.
Choose Good Influences
“everyone is affected by three kinds of influences: input (what you feed your mind), associations (the people with whom you spend time), and environment (your surroundings).” – The Compound Effect (119)
the great thing about all three of these things is that we ultimately choose them: input (who/what we listen to), associations (whom we hangout with) and environment (what we surround ourselves with). choose good influences that align with our ultimate goal, whatever that may be.
Embrace The Struggle, Keep Moving
“Happiness is not the absence of problems but the ability to deal with them.” – H. Jackson Brown
when things go differently than what we had planned or expected (in any aspect of our lives: health, love life, work, school, etc.), we must be resilient and keep moving forward. first we must accept that there will always be hardships and struggles and bs. then we must embrace the fact that without these things, we wouldn’t know what love, beauty, or strength were.
i believe that without hate, we wouldn’t know or appreciate what love really is. im not saying hate is ok or that we shouldn’t work towards a world without it, because I do believe that a world with less hate is something very feasible (especially now that our world has experienced so much of it). for instance, in the future i see “hate” being talked about the same way “once being able to smoke on an airplane” is talked about now. whenever i think about how smoking was once allowed on airplanes, my mind just explodes. they really allowed that? how could someone do that? what were they thinking? if someone were to light up on a plane today, that person would be scolded and definitely imprisoned! i see the same thing happening to hate. there will definitely be hate in the future, but it won’t be as prominent as it is today.
as bad as the world may seem right now to some people, i believe that we are taking steps in the right direction, and blogs like this and people like YOU are the ones moving it.
“My Lord tells me that for every 1 bad thing in this world, there are 1 million good things. Trust in Him and EVERYTHING will be ok.” – me
embrace the struggle and always keep moving. <– as you can see this applies to your job, your workout program, your relationships and everything else.
Be Consistent
“the positive results you want to experience in your life will be the result of smart choices (and actions) repeated consistently over time. you win when you take the right steps day in and day out.” – The Compound Effect (111)
from the get-go, i let my clients know that the toughest thing about our program will not be the resistance training or cardio training. the toughest thing will be trying to be consistent. i let all my clients know that true health and fitness is not a 2 or 3 week thing, it’s a lifestyle thing. health and fitness is a journey… a lifestyle.
